Tips to keep hair looking healthy and vibrant

  • 1

Never roughly dry hair with a towel. Always gently blot excess water.

  • 2

Don't rip through tangles from the top down. Start combing at the bottom and work your way up until the knot is free.

  • 3

Never brush out tangles on wet hair. Use a wide-tooth comb instead.

  • 4

Protect your hair from everyday damage with a leave-in treatment. Let your hair air dry at least 50% before blow drying to limit the damage that the intense blow dryer heat can cause.

Questions Answered

  • As a stylist, what do you look for in products?
I look for products that help repair damaged hair and work every time. I really do have to knock it out of the park with every client and can't afford a bad hair day. Many of my clients have to change their hair color often and go through heavy styling daily. I need products that help preserve the healthy look of the hair so that it looks fresh and healthy every time.
  • What causes damaged hair?
Hair can be damaged from sun-exposure, chemical processing such as coloring, curling and straightening, as well as physically by combing and blow-drying.
  • How do NOURISH+ products make my hair less damaged?
The AVEENO® NOURISH+ Hair Care Collection helps to smooth and condition hair, strengthening each strand to help prevent breakage and prevent future styling damage, while providing a healthy-looking shine.
  • What causes frizzy hair?
Frizz is caused by the interaction of the moisture present in the air and the hair fibers.
  • What is the best way to control frizzy hair?
How do I control frizzy hair is the question I get asked the most. Frizzy hair needs to be smoothed out. This is true for curly hair or straight styles. The main goal is to get the cuticle layer to lie flat and smooth. For curls, the less you handle the hair during the drying process the shinier and smoother the curls will be. Avoid brushing curls allowing them to ring on their own or twist them into place.

For a smooth blow dry use a boar bristle brush and dry each section of hair with the blow dryer pointing down the hair shaft. Use the nozzle attachment to further direct the heat. Dry the hair completely, as any residual water in the hair will revert back to frizz. Finish with the cool setting on your dryer to close the cuticle and set the shine.
  • Should I wash my hair every day?
Regular washing removes dirt and buildup that can make hair look dull and hard to style.
I wash my hair every single day. But not everyone needs to do the same. Hair that is more thick and coarse can go a little longer without washing, especially if you're using quality products such as AVEENO® NOURISH+ Hair Care.
  • How often should I use conditioner?
You should use conditioner every time you shampoo your hair. If you are worried about conditioner making your hair flat, use a volumizing conditioner and keep it off of your scalp focusing on the mid shaft to the ends.
  • What's the best way to repair my damaged hair?
The best way to repair damaged hair is to replenish lost moisture and protein. AVEENO® NOURISH+ offers a collection of products that do just that, restoring strength, softness, and shine.
  • What products should I use to nourish my dry hair?
Dry hair needs moisture. AVEENO® NOURISH+ Moisturize shampoo and conditioner is the perfect combination of protein and natural hydrating ingredients that lock in moisture and soothe dry hair.
  • How can I avoid split ends?
The only way to get rid of split ends is to cut them off. Regular trims help to keep them from returning and creeping up the hair shaft. To avoid split ends, you need to be gentle with your hair and treat it kindly. Use a nourishing shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair strong and flexible so it doesn't break as easily in the first place.
  • What type of shampoo and conditioner should I use for an itchy, dry scalp?
Itchy, dry scalp can be calmed by using the AVEENO® NOURISH+ Soothe shampoo. The natural lavender and peppermint calm the skin and relieve the tight itchy feeling.
  • What are the benefits of using a leave-in treatment?
Leave-in treatments are great for continuing the conditioning and protecting all day. It is important to protect your hair from heavy use of heat styling creating a barrier that holds the moisture in. Leave-in treatments are a must for very dry damaged hair adding needed moisture and extra shine.
  • How do I get a good hair day more often?
Good hair days start with good hair. The healthier your hair is, the better it looks and the easier it is to style. Target your specific hair needs and use a shampoo and conditioner for your specific hair type.

Get a great haircut that works with your hair texture and your face shape. A great cut looks good with minimal styling.
  • Is it bad to blow dry my hair every day?
Blow drying can be harsh on your hair. Healthy hair can take the heat but you need to protect it. Anytime you can give your hair a break and skip the blow dryer is a good thing.
  • Do rollers or curling irons give the best curls?
Rollers and curling irons give very different results. Hot rollers or Velcro rollers give the hair a lot of volume at the roots. And they give you a hands free break while you are getting ready. A curling iron is great for creating waves or spirals and for defining natural curls.
  • How can I protect my hair from the damage that hair dryers and flat irons cause?
Your first defense against damage from dryers and irons is shampoo and conditioner. AVEENO® NOURISH+ products help create a barrier that locks in moisture to protect your hair from heat and stress that styling causes.
  • What's the effect of bleaching vs. dying my hair?
Bleaching your hair is a process of taking out the natural pigments in your hair and lightening it. This also strips away any natural moisture and breaks down the proteins leaving the hair weak and fragile.

Dying the hair is about depositing pigment into the hair. This happens by breaking down the natural bonds with ammonia or other agents so the pigment will absorb. This can also be very damaging.

Both when done carefully can create a beautiful shiny look but your hair will require extra care and maintenance to maintain a healthy look.
  • Should I comb my hair wet or dry?
Wet hair is more fragile than dry hair. Always use a wide tooth comb to detangle wet hair, and use a brush on dry hair. Start at the bottom and work your way up to get rid of tangles and knots.
  • How many times a day should I brush my hair?
The old wives tale of brushing your hair a hundred strokes can actually cause breakage. Brush your hair once a day to remove any tangles. Use a brush with natural bristles that will help distribute natural oils from your scalp to your ends. Avoid brushing curly hair unless it is styled straight.
