Many people describe their skin as sensitive, but what does "sensitive skin" really mean? It probably means something a little different for each of us. Most people who have sensitive skin complain of stinging, tightness, itching or burning sensations. In many ways, sensitive skin is very similar to dry skin. Sun damage or skin conditions, such as rosacea, eczema or allergic-type skin (atopic dermatitis), can cause the skin to feel extra-sensitive. Many people of color have extra-sensitive skin which require extra-gentle care, especially when treating specific skin conditions, such as blemishes. Skin can also become more sensitive in the winter when subjected to cold, dry air and windy conditions.

The discomfort of sensitive skin may be most obvious after using a particular skin product. Some cleansing products can be drying and irritating to people with sensitive skin. That's because many cleansers contain detergent-like substances that can deplete your skin of its natural oils. The drier your skin gets, the more it may hurt. But even some ingredients in products designed to moisturize skin can set off a reaction in sensitive skin. For this reason, it's important to choose the right products that are formulated especially for sensitive skin. Such products have been extensively tested and contain ingredients that are very mild and gentle. Many are fragrance-free and allergy tested to assure that they are safe for use on skin.
