COLD-WEATHER SKINCARE ADVICE FROM AN EXPERT
To help you get the best cold-weather skincare tips for your baby, AVEENO® turned to an expert. We took some of the most frequently asked skincare questions moms have about dealing with colder temperatures and shared them with pediatric dermatologist Dr. Silverberg. Dr. Nanette B. Silverberg, MD is board-certified both in pediatric dermatology and dermatology and is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Silverberg, is the Director of Pediatric and Adolescent Dermatology at Continuum Hospitals in New York City. She currently teaches as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Dermatology at the Columbia University School of Medicine, practices pediatric dermatology, and lectures and publishes widely.
MOM. How does chilly weather affect my baby's skin?
DR. S. During the winter season, cold temperatures outdoors and dry heat indoors limit the humidity in the air. By direct contact with this drier air, your baby's skin loses moisture, which can result in chapping and irritation.
MOM. What do you recommend to soothe my baby's dry skin?
DR. S. The most critical treatment for dry skin is the consistent use of moisturizers. Moisturizers are the key to managing dry skin and should be used as a lifetime preventative therapy. (That goes for you too, Mom.) I also recommend washing your baby using gentle cleansers, covering up skin that's exposed to the elements, and always using sunscreen. Rough fabrics and strong detergents should be avoided. You might also want to try a humidifier.
MOM. Creams vs. lotions. Do you have a favorite?
DR. S. It really depends on the season. Creams are more hydrating and preferable for the winter. Lotions are lighter and more appropriate for the summer.
MOM. What ingredients should I be looking for in a baby moisturizer?
DR. S. You want a moisturizer with oil bases such as glycerine and petrolatum. Look for extra soothing ingredients such as oatmeal and soy extracts, as well as ceramides, which help maintain your baby's skin barrier through moisturization.
MOM. What do you think about the use of natural ingredients in moisturizers?
DR. S. Some natural ingredients, such as oat and soy, are highly beneficial for the skin due to their soothing properties. Others can actually irritate baby's skin. Look for fragrance-free products and be sure to read product labels and only use products made by companies that test their ingredients.
