SUNNY TIPS:
  • Dress your baby in tightly woven, loose-fitting clothing: lightweight pants, a long-sleeved shirt and definitely a hat.
  • Be sure all exposed skin is protected with a generous application of sunscreen, including all those little sensitive spots from the tips of ears to the tops of feet.
  • Try to make your baby wear UV-protective sunglasses, even though your baby will probably prefer to chew them.
  • Be sure your stroller has a canopy or an attached umbrella.
  • Consider putting up a tent for shade, especially if you plan on staying out in the sun for a long time.
There's nothing sunny about sunburn.
Unfortunately, it's easy for your baby's skin to burn. Given your baby's delicate skin, it can take as little as 10 minutes. Not only are sunburns painful, but they can also cause more serious conditions like fever and dehydration. Irreversible sun damage can actually begin the first summer of a baby's life.

The American Academy of Dermatology recognizes that proper and regular use of sunscreens with broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) protection, along with wearing sun-protective clothing and seeking shade, can help protect against sunburn and may reduce long-term skin damage caused by sun exposure.

If your baby does get a sunburn, consult a doctor.
