Caring for your Baby´s Skin

Your skin is the largest and one of the most important organs of the human body. It's responsible for the sense of touch, it holds vital water in our body and keeps out toxins and bacteria, and begins to form soon after conception. The outermost, waterproof protective layer of the skin forms very early in pregnancy. Later the oil glands (sebaceous glands) develop and secretions from these glands are responsible for one of the most wonderful things about babies — that special sweet baby scent! After birth, some parts of the baby's skin are still in the process of developing. For the first several months of life, a baby's skin cannot protect itself from the sunlight. This is because a baby doesn't yet have much melanin, the pigment that gives the skin its color and natural protection from the sun. The barrier function of an infant's skin develops over time, so substances that are applied to the skin are more easily absorbed.
