Change your baby on a warm, clean surface and keep one hand on him or her at all times.

Changing your baby’s diaper is quick and easy if you follow these simple steps.

Preparation

Prepare your supplies by gathering a clean diaper, baby wipes and a diaper rash ointment. Wash and dry your hands, then set up a warm, clean changing area– a changing table or a cloth on a soft, warm surface. If you change your baby on an elevated surface such as a changing table or bed, be sure to keep one hand on your baby at all times. Don’t leave your baby unattended for even a second.

Changing the diaper
  1. Unfasten the diaper tabs and fasten them back on themselves so they don't stick to your baby.
  2. Use the front half of the dirty diaper to wipe away any stool. If your baby is a boy, cover his genitals with a clean cloth or diaper so he doesn’t urinate on either of you during the diaper change.
  3. Lift your baby's bottom off the table by grasping both ankles with one hand and gently lifting upward.
  4. Fold the dirty diaper in half under your baby, clean side up.
  5. Use a baby wipe or wet cloth to thoroughly clean your baby's front. If your baby’s a girl, be sure to wipe from front to back (from her vaginal area to her bottom). This helps keep bacteria from causing an infection.
  6. Lift both of your baby's legs and clean his or her bottom. Apply diaper rash cream, if needed.
  7. Position the back half of a clean diaper (the half with the tabs) under your baby's bottom, and the front half between the legs. Tips: Try not to bunch the diaper between your baby's legs — it can cause chafing and discomfort. If your baby is a newborn, avoid covering the umbilical cord stump.
  8. Fasten the diaper at both sides with the tabs. The diaper should be snug but not so tight that it pinches your baby’s skin. Check the manufacturer's instructions for specific tips.
  9. Re-tape the dirty diaper around the contents and dump it in the trash. Dress your baby and wash your hands thoroughly.
