Dr. Cherie is an Assistant Professor within the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania and the Director of the Cosmetic Dermatology & Skin Enhancement Center at Penn Medicine in Radnor, PA.

 

 

Q. What’s the single best thing we can do to prevent photoaging?
A. Sunscreen – every day, all year long! Even in the winter, exposure to the sun’s rays speeds up the aging process in the skin. This exposure increases the risk of developing dry skin, wrinkles and age spots. Daily use of a sunscreen can slow these sun-induced signs of aging and reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. I recommend wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher on all skin that will be exposed. Vitamins and antioxidants (such as soy) are great added benefits for sun care products because they are known to help further shield your skin against environmental damage.

 

Q. Are there certain anti-aging skin care ingredients that have more benefit than others?
A. Retinols and retinoids (topical Vitamin A by prescription) help reduce the look of wrinkles and discoloration. Antioxidants (such as Vitamins C & E) are also essential because they neutralize free radicals--molecules from the sun and pollution that damage (and age) skin. Natural ingredients with proven benefits for photodamaged skin include feverfew, green tea, mushrooms and soy. And of course, sunscreen is the most important ingredient of all!

 

Q. What else can we do to slow the visible signs of aging?
A. I ask patients questions about their lifestyle. Do you have a healthy diet and exercise program? Do you take supplements like antioxidants to help your body (and skin) fight off the ravages of time? Drinking plenty of water (about eight glasses a day) and getting enough sleep (about eight hours a night) are changes that can help achieve a daily balance and a less stressful life. Anti-aging nutrition is all about fresh food: fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, and whole grains. Finally, there are also a number of aesthetic procedures that dermatologists offer for skin rejuvenation such as lasers, peels and microdermabrasion. Of course, using a moisturizer daily, with a sunscreen, is essential to keeping skin hydrated and protected.
